ABURI ORPHANAGE ROBBERY SAGA....WHO IS TO BE BLAMED?

After armed robbers raided, beat and raped inmates and caretakers of the Lighthouse Christian Children's Home, no authority has extended any help to them.

The administrator of the home, Bridget Miriam Ogoe who described the situation as traumatic said she is very sad and frustrated. She added that only the leaders of the Lighthouse Chapel which set up the orphanage has provided assistance.

Speaking to Joy FM's Bernard Nasara Saibu on the Super Morning Show Wednesday, Madam Ogoe who could barely find the courage to repeat a narrative of what transpired in the home when the robbers raided there Monday dawn, she was expecting that at least, the Member of Parliament of the area as well as authorities of the District Assembly among others would call and sympathise with them and even extend help.

A number of inmates were defiled amidst severe beatings when armed men numbering about four stormed the ophanage Monday dawn. They also made away with items including computers, phones, decoders and some money.

The victims have been treated at the hospital and discharged.

She also expressed disappointment at the police of Aburi, saying they did not do much to help them. The police spent just about 30 minutes upon arriving at the scene and would not even listen to their plea for them to leave behind at least one personnel. The administrator says she was expecting them to do a lot more considering the state in which the victims were.

She vehemently discounted claims by the police that they didn't know an orphanage existed in the area.

"You do not set up an orphanage without the knowledge of police, when the Aburi police gets orphans they bring them there. Are they saying they don't know there's an ophanage in Aburi?

"That's a blatant lie..."

THREE ARREST OVER DEATH OF STUDENT

Three persons have been arrested in connection with the death of a Level 400 student of the Evangelical Presbyterian University College in Ho.

They are: Senyo Anku, 28, a driver; Frank Awudey, 22, student and Albert Nunyuie, 30, a painter.

The suspects allegedly attacked the deceased, Percy Nubuake, who at the time, was in the company of his girl-friend, said to be a former girlfriend of Anku, one of the suspects.

Anku is alleged to have led the other suspects to kill Nubuake to pave way for a reunion between him (Anku) and the lady.

The Ho Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Nicholas Opare Ofosuhene confirmed the death of Percy Nubuake and the arrest of three suspects currently in custody.

He declined further comments.

A close friend of the deceased, who chose to be identified as Mussey, said the deceased was going to officially propose marriage to the lady that night when the unfortunate incident occurred.

According to Mussey, he had been informed by persons close to the lady at the centre of the crime that when the suspects approached Nubuake and his partner, they subjected Nubuake to a search and found only his phone and the promisory ring he intended giving to the lady.

“Nubuake is said to have then asked the attacker whether he knew him and enquired further whether he could not make him out. Just after, Nubuake was shot dead”, Mussey recounted to the Daily Graphic.

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has named Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien in a 26-man squad to face Zambia in next month's World Cup qualifier.

MY OPINION ON PEACE MESSAGES BEFORE THE FINAL SUPREME COURT VERDICT...........

 As Ghanaians await the final verdict of the supreme court, many are those who continue to preach peace in the country ,in the view of preventing the uprising of  any possible mayhem. 

It is always good to create the awareness of people on issues concerning  peace in the country.But the fact is that,"THE PEACE INDUSTRY" has become lucrative that people are taking advantage of the whole situation and are rather creating tension and fear in the citizens of Ghana.

I suggest ,that it will be better for such people or institutions to rather educate Ghanaians about the existenbce of laws in the country  and the need for the laws to be obeyed.

Why should we beg people not to cause mayhem when we have existing laws of the country?

Instead of telling people to obey the laws of the country, we are rather begging them not to cause violence......

Those who are preaching peace are rather creating tension.

 Aspects Of Addison’s Oral Submission “Interesting But False” – Ben Ephson

Public rating of the oral submission by lawyers representing both the Petitioners and Respondents in the ongoing Election Petition Suit at the Supreme Court appears varied, mostly based on one’s political affiliation.
Whiles some believe Lawyer Tony Lithur, Quarshie-Idun and Tsatsu Tsikata proved their mettle and floored Lawyer Philip Addison, some averred rather differently.
But Renowned Pollster and Seasoned Journalist, Ben Ephson Jnr., has described certain aspects of the oral submission made by Philip Addison, as “interesting but false”.
Ben Ephson asserts that in the course of his submission, “Lawyer Addison made two very interesting points towards the end. He said that President Mahama had over 447,000 plus votes more than his parliamentary candidates and that was bizarre and odd. The second point was that, the NPP is in the minority yet they have over 112, 000 votes more than the NDC majority”.
And according to him, “that’s another interesting but false analysis”.
He pointed out that “in 2008, the NDC had a smaller majority in Parliament yet, the NPP minority had 283,000 votes than the NDC majority. And it is simply because where NPP have their safe seats,there are more voters there. That is why in 2008, Nana Akufo Addo nearly became President with only two regions”.
Mr. Ephson, who is the Managing Editor of the Dispatch Newspaper made these observations during a telephone interview on ‘Tea Cup’,on Radio Gold.
It was to throw more lighton his9th August edition of the Newspaper with its banner headline, ‘Addison’s Figures Confirm Mahama’s 2012 Prez Victory’? The newspaper likened events at Wednesday’s proceedings at the Supreme Court to a soccer match where a late goal own goal has been scored.
“It looks like some figures released by the lead counsel of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) petitioners,could help some ordinary Ghanaian believe that President John Mahama deserves his 2012 presidential victory. It can be described as a late own goal” The Daily Dispatch publication read.

 Afari-Gyan advice to polling agents: Don’t refuse to sign a pink sheet - Gabby

Gabby Otchere- Darko is suggesting that the signature of the polling agents does not mean there was nothing wrong with the 2012 polls because, they signed according to instructions of the Chair of Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan.

Gabby Otchere Darko is claiming, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan advised polling agents to sign results of a polling station even if they had complaints about the electoral process.

The results of the 2012 presidential polls which the ruling NDC's John Mahama was declared winner by the Electoral Commission, is being challenged at the Supreme Court by three Petitioners from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Petitioners are claiming that there were irregularities on the pink sheets which were used to declare the results at the polling station. These irregularities they claim had a profound effect in declaring John Mahama winner.

But the Respondents, John Mahama, the Electoral Commission and the National Democratic Congress, are also insisting that the results on the pink sheets were signed by party agents of the Petitioners - NPP Presidential Candidate, its vice presidential candidate and National Chairman.

But speaking on Joy FM's Newsfile, Gabby Otchere-Darko, a member of the NPP recalled that the Chair of the Electoral Commission at a meeting on 5th December 2012, told a meeting with editors that a political party agent should still sign a result whether or not he agreed with it because, the absence of a signature does not invalidate the results.

The Executive Director of the Danquah Institute said, Dr. Afari-Gyan urged party agents accredited to a polling station to first, sign results as counted and declared and get a copy of the results as recorded on the pink sheets.

He said at the meeting, they were told that the party agents after obtaining a signed copy, could then proceed to the constituency collation centre and show it as evidence of irregularity.

He said Dr. Afari-Gyan explained that, at the collation center, a pink sheet from every polling station within a constituency is used to determine what may have gone wrong with the results. It was at that point that any claim of irregularity could be resolved.

He suggested that the signature of the polling agents should not be misconstrued to mean there was nothing wrong with the results of the polls.

But Nana Ato Dadzie, a former Chief of Staff explained that procedurally, there was a complaint form on which a party agent could register his protest if he was dissatisfied with the results.

He also added that on the pink sheet, there is a section which provides a column for "reasons if you refuse to sign" - meant to give a party agent the opportunity to raise a protest.

But despite all these procedures, no party agent recorded any protest.

It is expected that the court will be giving a ruling on the Petition by the end of the month

TV3 dismisses anchor Henry Herbert Malm

One of TV3′s star news anchors Henry Herbert Malm has been shown the exit.

Sources at the station tell us Mr. Malm was sacked on Friday over a “petty” issue he had with one of the top bosses at the station Mary-Ann Eyram Acolatse.

He is said to have flouted a directive by Ms. Acolatse, who is Director, News, Current Affairs, to have a regular guest on his late night News @ 10 programme, thrown in as new co-host.

Mr. Malm our sources say didn’t take lightly, the decision to “super-impose” the supposed new co-host on both him and the show. His protest somewhat didn’t sit well with his boss, hence the sack.

According to sources, the decision to outrightly sack Mr. Malm has caused fear amongst some sections of the workforce, a fright also informed by recent resignations of some key on-air personalities.

The station has lost some key persons in the last few months. Bright Nana Amfo, who returned to Adese We after a stint at the Kennedy Agyapong-owned NET 2 TV, has since taken up a new role at Multi TV.

Roland Walker, until recently one of the station’s most cherished assets, has also left, and is said to be doing “fine” at one of the numerous private companies belonging to the group that also owns Zoomlion.

Station sources tell this website that from the look of things, a recency effect of the Malm-Amfo-Walker situation could trigger further voluntary and pushed-to-go exits, and have also suggested most are having difficulties with the management style of the team put in place by new owners Media General Ghana Limited.

Ms. Acolatse, who was brought back to the station by the new owners after stints at Metro TV and Multi TV, station sources say is seeking new directions to the way news and current affairs programmes are handled at the outfit, and that seems to be winning her more “enemies” than friends .
With a nationwide penetration of a little over 70 per cent, TV3 remains one of the most watched local channels in Ghana.

The company began transmission on October 1, 1997.

Incorporated under the Companies Code, 1963, (Act 179), as a limited liability company on August 29, 1996, the company received its certificate to commence business on September 19, 1996.

A Joint Venture Agreement was entered into by the Government of Ghana, Gama Media Systems, Gama Film Company and Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Berhad that same year.

A 13-year-old boy killed his police officer parents as well as his grandmother and great-aunt before spending a full day at school and then taking his own life.

Police believe Marcelo Pesseghini shot each victim in the head with a .40 caliber pistol early Monday morning at the home in Sao Paulo, Brazil, before catching a lift into school with a friend.

The father, Luiz Pesseghini, 40, a police sergeant with 19 years service was found in bed. The mother, Andreia Pesseghini, 30, who had served in the military police for 16 years was found on her knees in the bedroom. (Marcelo and his parents pictured above)


The grandmother, Benedita de Oliveira Bovo, 65, and great-aunt Bernadete Oliveira da Silva, 55, who lived in a different section of the house were both killed in bed.The teenager was found dead from a gunshot to the left temple and his father's police-issue service revolver was found nearby.

A second gun, a .32 caliber revolver, was found inside the backpack the teenager took to school.

The teenager appears to have been inspired by the infamous Amityville killings of 1974 when a man killed his parents, two bothers and two sisters at their home in Amityville, Long Island, New York.  All were found dead in their beds.

CCTV footage taken from a security camera close to the property in the Brasilândia district in the northern part of São Paulo appears to show him casually walking back home after school.

'Everything seems to indicate that Marcelo (Pesseghini) killed his parents and relatives,' Itagiba Franco, of the Sao Paulo Civilian Police's homicide department, told a press conference.
Franco said Pesseghini had told a friend he wanted to kill his parents and become a hitman.

'He always told me he wanted to become a hired killer. He had a plan to kill his parents during the night, so that no one would notice and escape in the parents' car and live in an abandoned place,' police quoted the unidentified friend as saying.

Sao Paulo police commander Benedito Roberto Meira said there was no sign that someone had broken into the house and ruled out 'an act of revenge by a criminal group' against the teenager's father and mother.

Worryingly the teenager appears to have been inspired by the infamous Amityville killings with the crimes bearing chilling similarities to the 1974 murders.  

In the early hours of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr killed his parents-Ronald and Louise and four siblings. All were found dead in their beds.

The Amityville killings later sparked rumours of the supernatural after it was claimed that the house where they took place was haunted.

A famous picture known as the Amityville Ghost Boy which emerged in 1976 purports to show the ghost of the youngest victim of the massacre.

In December last year Marcelo Pesseghini posted the Ghost Boy picture, on his Facebook page.

 Supreme Election Petition: 4th September Judgment Day?

The verdict of the Supreme Court on the Presidential Election Petition challenging the declaration of John 
 Mahama as winner of Ghana's 2012 presidential elections may come on September 4, 2013.

President of the panel of judges hearing the case gave the indication after the court heard last minute oral pitches by lawyers for the petitioners and the respondents, Wednesday.

Justice William Atuguba said the court will return on August 14, 2013 to tie up some loose ends and seek clarification where necessary. After that, count of the mandatory 15 days - after close of arguments - within which the verdict must be given will begin, he said.

Counting 15 week days from August 15, the verdict is likely to come on September 4.

The Petitioners - NPP flagbearer in the 2012 elections, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and party Chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey - want some three million votes nullified.

They say those votes were invalid because of irregularities and statutory violations during the polls.

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respondents, John Mahama, the Electoral Commission, and the National Democratic Congress respectively, have however maintained that elections were credible, free and fair.

They contend that what the petitioners point to as evidence of irregularities and statutory violations were at best clerical errors.

MAHAMA GENUINELY WON 2012 ELECTION- NDC TATES IN ADDRESS TO SC











The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reiterated its position that its candidate in the December 2012 presidential election, Mr John Dramani Mahama, genuinely won the election.

In a 69-page address filed at the Supreme Court registry on July 31, 2013, the party is of the view that the very petition challenging the legitimacy of President Mahama had no leg to stand on from the day it was filed to the day the hearing of the petition ended.

“In this case the petitioners have not even crossed the threshold of discharging the evidential burden. As a result of their inability to produce material that they claimed they were supplying as evidence and because of the confused state of the material they supplied, a value of zero is the necessary outcome for the Petitioners,” the NDC argued in its address.

The address, filed on behalf of the party by one of the lawyers for the NDC, Mr Samuel Codjoe, indicated that the petitioners failed to establish that there were indeed irregularities of over-voting, persons voting without undergoing biometric verification, some presiding officers not signing pink sheets and some pink sheets having duplicate serial numbers.

It drew excerpts from evidence of the witnesses in the case and relied on areas that strengthened the NDC’s claim that the election was indeed free, fair and transparent.

“The documentary evidence provided by them and the oral testimony of their witness, the 2nd Petitioner, contain admissions about the results declared which fundamentally undermine the case of the petitioners and confirm the position of the respondents that the elections were conducted freely and fairly and that the results declared by the Chairman of second Respondent, namely that the first Respondent was the winner of the 2012 Presidential election, reflected the sovereign will of the people of Ghana and were lawful.

“It is our submission that the petitioners have woefully failed to establish the alleged ‘irregularities, violations’ etc, nor have they proved that the alleged ‘irregularities, violations’ etc affected the outcome of the 2012 Presidential election,” the address stated.

The party also made reference to records of proceedings and evidence from witnesses in the case to prove its argument that “the case presented by the petitioners comes nowhere close to discharging the burden of proof that lies on them to establish their allegations and warrant the reliefs they seek from this Honourable Court.”

No evidence of irregularities

It submitted that on a correct interpretation of constitutional provisions and other laws governing the election and having regard to the evidence before the court, the following conclusions regarding the main allegations of the petitioners emerge clearly:

Over-voting

It said there was no evidence that any voter in the election voted more than once or that any person not entitled to vote was allowed to vote, adding that “indeed, the evidence proffered by petitioners themselves showed overwhelmingly that the agents of the 1st Petitioner, as well as other agents, signed the declaration of results in the various polling stations after votes were counted in full public view.”

The first petitioner is Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, while the second and third petitioners are his running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey.

According to the NDC, there were no complaints by the agents of the candidates at polling stations or constituency centres regarding the allegation that over-voting was recorded anywhere.

“The claims of over-voting of the petitioners were, in large part, admitted not to hold and were abandoned by second Petitioner under cross-examination. Claims still pressed by petitioners are also untenable on a proper interpretation of information provided on the pink sheets and available evidence and must all be rejected,” the party held.

Biometric verification

The party argued that the challenges of using biometric verification devices for the first time in elections in Ghana were successfully overcome and no one voted without going through the biometric verification process.

“The testimony provided by the Chairman of the second Respondent, about the C3 column on the Statement of Poll and Declaration of Results for the office of the President forms (“the pink sheets”) was unchallenged and explained the problems the Presiding Officers had in filling that part of the pink sheet,” the address submitted .

No signatures of presiding officers

Dismissing calls by the petitioners for the annulment of votes because of absence of signatures of the presiding officers on pink sheets, the NDC said that issue “does not justify annulment of votes that were cast lawfully in the exercise of the constitutional rights of citizens.”

“While failure to sign constitutes a breach of the duty imposed on that election official by the Constitution, nowhere does the Constitution require or justify the annulment of votes cast and, hence, the results announced at the relevant polling station because of such a breach,” the address pointed out.

The party was of the view that the said presiding officers could be compelled to perform their duty to sign by order of mandamus, adding that “annulment of votes in these situations would not only be an unconstitutional deprivation of the right to vote of the citizen but would also amount to punishing innocent voters retroactively for the omission of the presiding officer.”

Duplicate serial numbers on pink sheets

According to the NDC, serial numbers were not, and had never been, security features on pink sheets, unlike ballot papers and argued that “the petitioners have provided no legal basis for this category of their claim.

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Council, Eugene Antwi believes that every objective, right-thinking democrat ought to conclude that the 2012 general elections organized by the Electoral Commission(E.C) were shambolic.

This conclusion, he says was non-partisan and patriotic. The NPP man said there was no need to pretend about the lack of credibility of the December polls especially if when analyzed in a non-partisan spirit.

Mr. Antwi was discussing Ghana's Election Petition brought by leading figures in the opposition NPP. The Petition is alleging massive infractions and irregularities during the polls which they believe led to the wrongful declaration of the governing NDC's John Mahama as winner of the 2012 general elections.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana program Monday, he said his focus of constructive criticism was not on the actions of interested parties such as the declared winner John Mahama or his party the NDC but rather on the Electoral Commission.

"We all know what the infractions are”; every objective, right-thinking democrat can come to a conclusion that our elections was shambolic”, he said.

The NPP man was convinced that the Electoral Commission had compromised the credibility of the polls and argued that the independence of the EC must not go unscrutinized.

He said this scrutiny was important because “tomorrow it could be you [NDC]”, he told co-panelist and deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Kofi Adams.

Kofi Adams responded that the petitioners failed to denigrate the performance of the E.C. during their counsel’s cross-examination of Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, the witness and Chair of the E.C.

To buttress his point he sought to rely on complimentary comments attributed to Boakye Agyarko, Campaign Manager of the NPP who is reported to have said hours before the process was over that the the 2012 elections were the cleanest yet.

But the NPP man would not allow him to make this reference. Appearing disruptive and uncompromising, he insisted that Kofi Adams ought to focus on the real issues.

“We are not in court because of Boakye Agyarko we are there because of pink sheets,” he said.

Kofi Adams nonetheless explained that the fact that polling agents of the NPP signed all pink sheets showed the results were certified as true – a point he said Tsatsu Tsikata had shown in court during the hearing of the election petition.

He conceded that there were problems with biometric verification and registration machines used during the polls but said that was to be expected because it was a new system.
